Mule Publicity Award

Sir Roco – Joan Rabbitte
• Sir Roco visits the local play group and interacts with the young children who have got to know him and look forward to his visits.
• Sir Roco also regularly visits people in around and about his area when Joan is taking him on outings.
• Sir Roco has lots of trucks & cars stop to have a talk to him and he loves to show himself off. He does a good job of promoting mules as many of them have not seen a mule before.
• Joan regularly has people come to visit him at home that prefer him to the donkeys as he hs an outgoing personality and he always has to get their attention.
• Each year Joan takes Sir Roco to the four shows in her area that have classes for mules and the public see him at the shows and many of them come over to see him and talk to Joan and ask questions about him and learn about mules.
• Sir Roco is doing an excellent job of raising the profile of mules in Southland. He is the only mule that we are aware of who is actively out and about in the region.

North Island Publicity Award

Sunlova Delos Delos has paraded with aplomb at Christmas and Easter church services at various churches for many years. With her quiet nature, she been in great demand On the centenary of Gallipoli, Delos was invited by the son of Henderson (who is the NZ soldier depicted in the painting erroneously called “Simpson and his donkey”) to lead the Henderson R.S.A in the Gallipoli parade. She carried it off really well. Delos went to Epsom Girls Grammar School to promote the 40-hour famine. The girls were donating money raised from fasting to send abroad to buy animals for use in third world countries. To play the part for the occasion Delos was clad in home made panniers. She was a great hit. Probably Delos’ highest public profile engagement was having her photo published on the front of the NZ TV Times! It is a popular national publication and her photo could be seen from many a newspaper, magazine or supermarket checkout stand. It was a great exposure and promotion for donkeys. Delos’ last high-profile outing was to take part in the comic Sci Fi movie at Unitec in West Auckland. The film premiered last March. Trevor was invited, but Delos had to stay at home and watch it on TV. Trevor feels that shows are a great place to publicize donkeys; and if he has time and there are kids around he will give them a ride or a drive in the carriage with Delos (the judges also like being given a carriage ride after the event!) His favourite story is Delos and Jessica at the Cambridge A & P Show. She has turned up every year for the past 4 years to help with Delos. This year Trevor drove Delos as pair with his other donkey Paula and Jessica was his groom and they won a reserve champion ribbon! Sunlova Delos is a worth recipient of this award.

South Island Publicity Award

Flaxton Green Ella Enchanted – Sherryn Green
They were advertising the Oxford Show in the Nth Canterbury paper. The photo of them both was lovely and I’m sure it, and the accompanying article, went a long way towards the amount of interest shown in our section on the day. A well-deserved candidate for the South Island Publicity Award.
